THE ARTISTIK JOURNEY OF THE SOULTHE ABSTRACT SYMBOLISM OF WAYAN SIKA
EXPLORES THE EDGES OF THE BALINESE HINDU FAITH

There comes a time in the creative energies of a people when they hark back their roots for inspiration and aswers to both the after life and their material world. This kind of soul searching and questioning is the basic for the art of Wayan Sika and his compa-triots who form the Sanggar Dewata Association in Bali. The balinese, like Plato, beleve that the whole universe can be interpreted as one of measurable harmony. Their imagination takes shape in an atmosphere of turbulence created by the tusle for supremacy between archetypal pairs of symbolic antagonistic forces: light and darkness, the spiritual and the material,or more naively good and evil to achieve and ideal state of harmony.

All through the history of the island, the Balinese have sought to develop their qualities of thought and feeling so that they may approach this ideal of perfection. They have managed to satisfy this need in various ways, through myth, through dance and song, through art. For this reason, the island saw the development of a strong stream of traditional art fed by artisans who believed in the power of myth in physical term and were able to sublimate it, first into ritual and eventually into their art.
