Marc Jurt
"Anatomies of the Invisible", an exhibition of the work of the Swiss artist Marc Jurt, will be held at the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) in Ubud, Bali from 28 July to 20 August.
The exhibition will be opened on Sunday 27 July in the presence of the artist and His Excellency the Swiss Ambassor to Indonesia Mr. Peter Hollenweger. A group of nearly sixty guests will be flying to Bali from Switzerland especially to attend the opening.
The 150 engravings, paintings, and objects are works inspired by Marc Jurt's sojourns in Bali over the past sixteen years. The exhibition shows the artist's evolution from the classical techniques of copperplate engraving to experimental works with hand-made papers, textiles, and pigment. The works express an on-going concern with dichotomy and the inner energies of nature. Often there is a finely worked, figurative element printed into an abstract field of spontaneous painting.
The exhibition is expected to attract serious collectors and to be of special interest to artists in Bali, where there is no tradition of print-making.
Marc Jurt was born in 1955, in NeuchÅtel (Switzerland) and held his first one-man show of drawings and paintings at the age of eighteen. His works are found in museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Japan. Although he lives and works primarily in Europe, he spends a portion of each year travelling and working in the countries of Asia, America, or the Mediterranean. Every second year or so, he returns to Bali.
"I always come back to Bali," he says. "Bali is exciting for me because the nature is so energetic. Here the invisible energy of nature is always pushing against the visible. And I have always been impressed by the discipline of the Balinese using simple natural materials in such complex ways as their offerings."
An 80-page catalogue with text by Diana Darling and 50 plates has been published to accompany the exhibition.
